Each year I choose a theme word to absorb into as many aspects of my life as possible. I began this practice in 2015 with the theme word ACCEPTANCE. I wrote out the various definitions of the word in my journal and then wrote about what these definitions meant to me and how I might apply them to my past, future and present reality. Throughout the year, I revisiting the word, trying to weave it into my daily life. I found that by focusing my attention on one theme throughout many areas of my life I was able to learn about myself and the world, and grow in ways I hadn't ever experienced.
In 2016, I focused on the theme word PROGRESS, repeating the same reflective practices as the prior year. To expand the fullness of this growth practice, I added an additional practice - to cross off one accomplishment per year from my life journey 'to-do' list. That year, the item I crossed off was training for and completing the Chicago marathon.
For 2017, I chose the theme word GRATITUDE. Adding onto practices carried over from the previous two years, I've added the practice of creating an annual vision board, goal chart or dream journal - any sort of visual, tangible snapshot of what I'd like to accomplish this year in any or every aspect of my life.
In the coming year, I will focus my attention on the theme word FREEDOM. I can see that much of my creative work hints at this subject already. Perfect examples are my FLIGHT and TRIUMPH motifs, which are both inspired by ideas related to the greater theme of freedom. Another example is how I've begun make my own roller stamps out of bits of stuff I have around the house and tp tolls. These, I use to create interesting patterns as backgrounds for my stamp motifs. It's been about allowing myself the freedom to try something other that what I've already done or seen; about not stiffling the curiosity and adventure simply because of the fear.
Over the next few weeks, I will introduce new handpainted designs and updated bag styles that speak to my ideas about this theme of FREEDOM. What theme word could you chose to focus on in 2018?
Blessing to you for this new year!
